Oscar, now the commander of the Royal Guards, is sent to Brittany to quell a rebellion. She is accompanied by Andre, who is still struggling with his feelings for her. Along the way, they encounter a group of peasant rebels and are able to persuade them to disband without bloodshed. Oscar is then reunited with her childhood friend, the Duke of Guiche, who has been appointed Governor of Brittany. However, it is quickly evident that the Duke is not popular with the locals, and his policies only serve to fan the flames of rebellion. Oscar must navigate the complex political situation while also confronting her own conflicted feelings about her past and her present duties. Meanwhile, back in Versailles, Marie Antoinette is growing increasingly frustrated with her role as a figurehead and begins to chafe against the restrictions placed upon her. Her discontent threatens to upset the delicate balance of power at court, and her advisors scramble to find a way to placate her without jeopardizing the King's authority. As the season reaches its midpoint, the stakes are higher than ever for all of the characters, and the question of who will emerge victorious in the struggle for power and influence becomes more urgent.
