Roy and Moss are invited to their boss, Denholm Reynholm's house for a dinner party. Desperate to impress their boss, the duo tries to enhance their looks with a bit of fashion sense. Roy borrows a leather jacket from his friend, while Moss decides to wear a pair of shoes that he believes will make him appear taller.
However, their efforts go in vain as they find themselves stuck in a number of awkward situations, thanks to their lack of social skills. Roy eats his starter with his fingers and spills wine over Denholm's wife, while Moss impresses the other guests with his knowledge of nerd culture.
Meanwhile, behind-the-scenes, Jen is tasked with entertaining Denholm's business associate, Philip, who is equally socially awkward. To make things worse, Jen forgets to check if he is vegetarian or not before ordering a meat-based dish for him.
As the night progresses, things go from bad to worse, and chaos ensues when the dinner guests get trapped inside the house, unable to leave due to an old-fashioned security system. Denholm loses his cool and blames the IT department for the malfunction. But as usual, Roy and Moss come to the rescue, hacking into the system and freeing everyone from the house.
Despite the mishaps, Denholm is pleased with Roy and Moss and even invites them to stay for a drink. However, things take a turn for the worse when they accidentally burn down the boss's living room. In a hilarious attempt to hide the damage, they attempt to carry the burnt sofa out of the house, unaware that it's still on fire.
Overall, the episode is a hilarious and cringe-worthy portrayal of the IT departments' inability to adapt to social situations. The Dinner Party episode of The IT Crowd is a must-watch for fans of the show's deadpan humor and awkward situations.
