Ep 1. The Work Outing

The Work Outing is the first episode of the second season of the British sitcom The IT Crowd. In this episode, the two main protagonists, Jen and Roy, are tasked with organizing the annual staff outing. However, things quickly spiral out of control when they accidentally book the wrong dates for the trip and end up taking the entire office to a gay musical instead of the football match they were supposed to go to.

The episode starts with Jen and Roy discussing the upcoming staff outing with their boss, Denholm. They are both excited about the prospect of getting out of the office for a day and doing something fun. However, things take a turn for the worse when Denholm suddenly dies from a heart attack shortly after their meeting. This sparks chaos in the office as everyone is unsure about what to do next.

Despite the tragic news, Jen and Roy are still determined to make the staff outing happen. They decide to go ahead with their plans and book tickets for the football match they think everyone wants to see. However, they quickly realize that they accidentally booked the wrong dates and that the match is not on the day they thought it was. Instead, they have booked tickets for a musical called "Gay: A Gay Musical", which they assume is a typo for the name "Guy".

Jen and Roy are initially reluctant to tell the rest of the office about their mistake, but their secret is soon exposed when a coworker spots the tickets and announces that they are going to a musical. Panic sets in as everyone starts to realize what has happened and that they are going to a gay musical instead of a football match. The office's resident oddball, Richmond, is particularly excited about the prospect of seeing a musical and even brings along his own pair of binoculars.

When they arrive at the theater, Jen and Roy try to pass off the musical as a "new kind of football" to the rest of the office. However, their cover is blown when they realize that the theater is full of gay men and drag queens. They try to make a run for it, but they are stopped by the theater owner, who mistakes them for a couple and insists that they enjoy the show.

Throughout the musical, the office is subjected to a series of bizarre and flamboyant musical numbers, which they struggle to understand and relate to. To make matters worse, Jen and Roy's attempts to leave the theater are repeatedly foiled by the theater owner and the cast. Eventually, they are able to escape and are relieved to find that the rest of the office has already left and gone on to a pub.

The episode ends with the office nursing their hangovers and reflecting on the bizarre turn of events that led them to a gay musical. Despite the chaos and confusion, they all agree that it was a memorable experience and that they had a great time. Jen and Roy, however, are left shaken by the experience and quietly vow to never organize a staff outing again.
