In episode 4 of The Chi season 1 titled "Quaking Grass", we continue to follow the various characters and their lives in the South Side of Chicago. The episode mainly centers on two storylines - Kevin's new friendship with Jake and Tracy's tumultuous relationship with her baby's father, Jason.
Kevin and Jake's newfound friendship is tested when they both attend a party at a girl's house. Once there, they are peer-pressured into drinking and smoking weed, but it quickly turns into a dangerous situation. The two boys are forced to make a difficult decision in order to protect themselves and their futures.
Meanwhile, Tracy struggles to navigate her relationship with Jason, who is more interested in hanging out with his friends and partying than being a responsible father. Tracy's frustration and anger boil over into a physical altercation at a party, causing her to question her own behavior and whether or not she is meant to be a mother.
Elsewhere, Ronnie attempts to make amends with Jada after his involvement in Coogie's death is revealed. He tries to offer support and comfort to her, but Jada is not interested in his remorse and pushes him away. In addition, Brandon is trying to make a name for himself in the culinary world but facing a setback as his food truck is towed. He turns to his girlfriend, Jerrika, for support but their relationship is strained due to her job and their conflicting schedules.
The episode also adds new characters to the mix, including Detective Cruz who is investigating Coogie's murder. He interviews various witnesses and attempts to piece together clues about the killer's identity. We also get a glimpse into Sonny's past and how he came to be involved in shady business deals.
Throughout "Quaking Grass", we see the various characters struggle with personal demons and relationships. It is evident that the South Side of Chicago is a place that is both tough and unforgiving, but also full of hope and resilience. The episode ends on a somber note as we see the human cost of the violence and poverty that affects the community, but also hints at the possibility of redemption and growth for the characters in the future.
