Supergirl season 2 episode 2, titled "The Last Children of Krypton," brings some old faces to the table alongside an intense showdown between Superman and an almost-invincible villain. After his arrival in National City, Clark Kent/Superman bonds with his cousin Kara/Supergirl over their shared Kryptonian heritage and team up to battle a new threat facing the city. This comes in the form of a dangerous and power-hungry alien named Metallo, who has been created as a result of a sinister scheme cooked up by Cadmus and Lena Luthor. Cadmus is a secretive organization that has been conducting experiments on alien beings, including Kara and Clark's biological father, both of whom have been captured by the evil organization.
Meanwhile, Kara's new boss, Snapper Carr, makes it clear that she still has to earn her keep at CatCo, with the young reporter struggling to adapt to his tough love management style. Alex Danvers, Kara's adopted sister, also takes center stage in this episode, trying to come to terms with her own inner turmoil over her decision to keep the truth about her father's whereabouts from Kara. As the team works together to stop Metallo from wreaking havoc on the city, they face several hurdles that might threaten their chances of success.
With Superman and Supergirl teaming up, fans get an exciting reunion for the two superheroes. The dynamic between the two is interesting, as they've grown up separately, with Clark on Earth and Kara in her pod until she was much older. We get to see the two characters connect over shared experiences and the challenges they face as Kryptonians living on Earth. In this episode, we also see Kara struggle with the idea of partnering up with Superman, as well as the pressure that comes with being seen as the lesser-known hero even though she's been on the scene for a while now. The episode explores the nuances of the relationship between these two characters and how they interact with each other.
The episode also delves into the challenges of working with a team, as tensions arise between the policing agency, the D.E.O. And Supergirl when it comes to the capture and interrogation of General Sam Lane, Lois Lane's father and a staunch opponent of all things alien. The D.E.O. wants to keep Lane in custody for as long as possible, while Supergirl sees the value in an alliance with the General, who has valuable intel for them. This disagreement between the two groups adds an extra layer of tension to the episode and creates more complexity in the show’s world, with each group having their own ideas on how to best handle threats.
Another key player in this episode is Lena Luthor, Lex Luthor's sister who is working to prove herself in the wake of her brother's crimes. Lena has agreed to assist Cadmus in its experimentation on alien beings in exchange for what she thinks is the ability to control Metallo. She is an enigmatic character and it will be interesting to see how the writers handle her character arc as the season progresses.
Overall, "The Last Children of Krypton" is a solid episode, delivering on both the action and character development fronts. It sets up interesting storylines for future episodes while also expanding on existing ones, creating a compelling world for viewers to immerse themselves in. With the stage set for Metallo to become a prominent villain, the audience has a lot to look forward to in future episodes.
