In the fourteenth episode of Psycho-Pass season 1, titled "Sweet Poison," we see the return of one of the series' most captivating villains - Shogo Makishima. The episode starts with some exciting action as Makishima and two other escaped convicts launch a terrorist attack on the Public Safety Bureau, which causes a ruckus and kills several people.
Meanwhile, Inspector Akane and her team are assigned to find out how to stop the terrorists and regain control of the crime-ridden city. They're able to trace the criminals' location temporarily, but their excitement is short-lived when the terrorists misdirect them with another planned attack elsewhere.
Soon enough, it becomes clear that the terrorists' ultimate target is none other than the Public Safety Bureau's drones, which utilize a new piece of technology capable of extracting The Sibyl System's Collective Psycho-Pass measurements, among other things. Once Makishima and his team get their hands on these readings, they'll be able to synthetically examine, imitate, and even surpass them, which is something that Sibyl's maintenance would never allow.
As if things couldn't get any worse, one of Makishima's accomplices infiltrates the Bureau's headquarters by disguising himself as an ambulance driver, and poisons everyone in the command center with a deadly gas. This leaves Akane, Masaoka, and several other Bureau members trapped and slowly dying unless they can find a way to escape or get any help before the poison runs its full course.
Throughout the episode, we see typical Psycho-Pass themes like justice, morality, and government control play out in different ways. The way Makishima moves in and out of the city and even manages to secure weapons and helps from common, law-abiding citizens suggests that despite Sybil's best efforts, the underground society still exists and flourishes.
Towards the end of the episode, we see Akane and her team utilize their varied strengths to try and get the antidote to their poisoned comrades. We also see glimpses of Shogo Makishima's sheer willingness to break societal norms to bring about his own definition of justice, even if it means sacrificing human lives.
Overall, "Sweet Poison" is a great episode with plenty of action scenes and a well-thought-out plot. It manages to keep the audience engaged by showcasing the challenges of the city's law enforcement, the severity of terrorist acts, and the seemingly insurmountable power of an AI government that can be exploited by wrongdoers if the system is flawed. With such anarchic criminals as Makishima and their grand schemes, it's definitely exciting to see how the future of the show will play out.
