In the Not Going Out season 6 episode 7 titled "Magic," Lee and Lucy's plans for a romantic evening are put on hold when Lee's old friend, magician The Great Alberto, unexpectedly shows up at their door. Lee is ecstatic to see his old friend, but Lucy is less than thrilled. The Great Alberto, played by guest star Rowan Atkinson, is a notorious prankster and Lucy doesn't want to deal with his antics.
Despite Lucy's objections, Lee invites The Great Alberto to stay for dinner. The dinner quickly becomes a spectacle as The Great Alberto performs magic tricks at the table, much to Lucy's dismay. The Great Alberto then reveals that he's in town for a magic competition and asks Lee to be his assistant.
Lee is thrilled at the opportunity and spends the next day rehearsing with The Great Alberto. Lucy is annoyed with the whole situation, feeling left out of Lee's newfound passion for magic. Meanwhile, Lee's neighbor, Toby, keeps dropping by unannounced and interrupting their rehearsals, much to their annoyance.
The night of the magic competition arrives and Lee and The Great Alberto take the stage. However, their performance is quickly derailed by a series of mishaps caused by The Great Alberto's carelessness. Despite their best efforts, the performance is a disaster and they're met with a lukewarm reception from the audience.
The Great Alberto takes the failure in stride, but Lee is devastated. Feeling humiliated, he lashes out at The Great Alberto and accuses him of sabotaging the performance on purpose. The Great Alberto denies it, but their friendship is strained nonetheless.
Later, Lee goes to apologize to The Great Alberto and finds him packing up to leave. The Great Alberto reveals that he did sabotage the performance, but only because he knew that Lee wasn't really passionate about magic and didn't want to see him waste his time on it. He encourages Lee to find his true passion and not be afraid to pursue it.
Lee takes The Great Alberto's words to heart and realizes that his true passion is actually writing. He decides to start working on a novel, much to Lucy's delight. The episode ends with Lee and Lucy cuddled up on the couch, with Lee furiously typing away on his laptop, finally following his dreams and passions.
