Lee Mack returns as the loveable but hapless Lee in the second episode of the sixth season of Not Going Out, entitled "Skiing". This episode follows Lee and his long-term girlfriend Lucy, as they embark on a winter sports holiday with their friends.
The episode opens with Lee excitedly packing his bags for the trip, while Lucy looks on, bemused by his over-the-top enthusiasm for skiing. Despite her reservations and lack of experience on the slopes, Lucy agrees to give skiing a go, primarily to keep Lee happy.
Upon arriving at their chalet, Lee and Lucy meet their friends, including Toby (played by Hugh Dennis) and his new girlfriend, Daisy (Katy Wix). As well as settling in and getting to know one another, the gang also have to contend with the organisation of their skiing equipment.
Lee, ever the joker, can't resist teasing his friends about their lack of knowledge or experience on the slopes. However, his mockery quickly backfires when he takes a spectacular tumble and injures himself. Despite this setback, Lee remains determined to ski, even though his friends insist on him getting checked out by a doctor.
Meanwhile, Lucy is struggling to get to grips with skiing and is feeling increasingly frustrated and isolated from the group. Her mood is not helped by the attention that Lee's accident is receiving, which is causing everyone to overlook her struggles.
As the day progresses, tensions between the group mount, and secrets are revealed. Moreover, Lucy is increasingly exasperated with Lee's behaviour and feels hurt by his prioritisation of skiing over her.
The episode is filled with hilarious moments, primarily driven by Lee Mack's natural comedic talent and the chemistry between the ensemble. The storyline intelligently explores familiar sitcom tropes of misunderstandings, jealousy, and comic mishaps while incorporating a fresh snowy backstop.
Throughout the episode, viewers will find themselves sympathising with various characters for various reasons. At the same time, the episode gives a fun, light-hearted insight into the challenges and rewards of skiing.
Overall, "Skiing" is a stellar episode of Not Going Out. It blends the humour, warmth, and fast-paced wit that fans have come to expect from the show, while also introducing new characters and relationships. It is an episode that both fans and newcomers to the show can appreciate, and one that is guaranteed to make you laugh out loud.
