Lee is a young man, perpetually unemployed, who likes to spend his days on the sofa, watching TV and smoking weed. His flatmate Kate, a successful career woman, is none too pleased to find Lee smoking pot in their living room yet again. She insists he take a job, any job, and find himself a girlfriend. Lee scoffs at the idea of work and insists he's perfectly happy alone.
But when Kate's former boyfriend Tim, a successful accountant, comes to visit, Lee starts to feel the weight of his own inadequacy. Tim and Kate have a grown-up relationship, with a mortgage and plans for the future, while Lee is stuck in a perpetual adolescence, with no prospects and no meaningful connections. Tim has some harsh critiques of Lee's life choices, and Lee takes them to heart.
Determined to prove he's capable of being a responsible adult, Lee takes a job at a charity shop, where he's immediately put to work organizing a fashion show. He befriends a fellow volunteer, Lucy, a bubbly and outgoing woman who seems to be everything Lee is not. As he spends more time with Lucy, Lee starts to develop feelings for her, but he's afraid to make his move.
Meanwhile, Kate is dealing with her own relationship issues, as she realizes that Tim might not be the right man for her. She confides in Lee, who's surprised to find himself playing a supportive role. Despite their bickering, Lee and Kate have a deep affection for each other, and Lee realizes that he might be better off with a friend like Kate than a girlfriend like Lucy.
The episode ends with Lee putting on a successful fashion show, impressing his boss and raising a lot of money for the charity. Lucy kisses him on the cheek, but Lee doesn't know what to do with his feelings. He goes home to an empty flat, but this time he doesn't feel quite so alone.
