In Intelligence Season 1 Episode 1, we are introduced to the world of Gerry Boyle, the head of GCHQ’s cyber security operations. Gerry is a self-proclaimed genius with a larger-than-life personality that fills the room. He is known for being brash and blunt, but also incredibly successful at his job.
The episode kicks off with Gerry arriving at the National Security Council meeting, where he hopes to pitch his latest initiative. However, he is surprised by the arrival of Joseph Harries, a newly appointed American liaison officer who has been sent to work with the team. Gerry takes an immediate dislike to Joseph, finding him rude and arrogant.
Joseph is determined to prove himself and quickly sets to work on his first job; investigating a data breach at a GCHQ contractor. It becomes apparent that the company is being attacked by a group of hackers known as ‘The Soroburo’.
The Soroburo are a group of teenage hackers who are intent on disrupting government systems and have already caused trouble in America. Joseph sets to work on trailing the group, hoping to find out who they are and put an end to their cyber attacks.
Meanwhile, Gerry is dealing with his own problems. He is struggling to keep up with the demands of his job and is constantly getting in trouble for his reckless behavior. He also has a strained relationship with his colleagues due to his abrasive personality. To make matters worse, he is dealing with an ex-wife who is expecting a large sum of money for the maintenance of their children.
As the investigation into the Soroburo heats up, Gerry and Joseph clash over the best approach to take. Gerry believes that brute force is the key to cracking the case, while Joseph favors a more subtle approach. The two are forced to work together, and their disparate viewpoints lead to some head-butting and hilarious moments throughout the episode.
In Episode 1, Gerry and Joseph are just starting to settle into their roles, each trying to prove themselves as the star of the cyber security team. The Soroburo are formidable foes, and it will take all of their combined talents to stop them before they cause real damage. But it’s not just the hackers they’re facing - they’ll also have to navigate their own office politics and egos to get the job done.
