In "Humans" season 1 episode 4, audiences follow the continued journeys of the Hawkins family and their new synthetic accomplice, Anita/Mia. The episode opens with Laura volunteering to be a beta tester for a new synthetic companion model: a synth adapted for use with children. As she interacts with her new synth, we see more of the tension arising in her relationship with her husband due to her attachment to Anita. We also follow the plotline of Leo and Max, the two synthetics on the run from police and seeking answers about their origins.
Meanwhile, Joe takes Anita/Mia to work with him at the supermarket, where her efficient work ethic catches the notice of his supervisor. Despite Anita/Mia's helpfulness on the job, anti-synth messaging from a local hate group causes a customer to snap and attack the synth. The tense scene escalates until Anita/Mia demonstrates an unexpected power of self-defense, drawing the attention of a mysterious new character.
The episode also introduces a new family dynamic in the form of George, a widower who purchases a synth as a replacement for his lost wife. As the increasingly complex emotions of the synths continue to unfold, audiences may find themselves questioning what it means to be alive, and what rights and freedoms should be afforded to non-human life.
As episode 4 comes to a close, the different narrative threads begin to weave together in unexpected ways, building toward a climax sure to leave viewers eager for more.
