Ep 7. The Scars of Space
- May 29, 2004
The Scars of Space is the seventh episode of season one of Gundam SEED, a mecha anime series that premiered in Japan in 2002 and later aired globally. The episode was directed by Mitsuo Fukuda and written by Chiaki Morosawa.
The episode opens with the Archangel crew on high alert as they approach the Neutral Orbital Docking Station, a neutral territory where both the Earth Alliance and the ZAFT forces can dock and resupply. The crew is still shaken from their encounter with ZAFT pilot, Athrun Zala, who had infiltrated the Archangel in the previous episode. Captain Ramius gives a stern order to her team - no one is to speak to ZAFT soldiers unless she specifically authorizes it.
At the docking station, Murrue Ramius meets with the station manager, who informs her that they have received suspicious reports of a ZAFT infiltration attempt. Meanwhile, Kira Yamato continues to struggle with his role as a Coordinator and whether he should support his fellow Coordinators or fight against them. His inner conflict is momentarily put on hold as he reconnects with Flay Allster, a classmate from Heliopolis and recent acquaintance from the Archangel.
As the Archangel docks, they spot ZAFT forces in the distance. The captain orders the team to prepare for battle, but Kira has other plans. He sneaks out of the ship to meet up with Flay, who is on the station's observation deck. The two share a tender moment, but it's cut short when Kira spots ZAFT forces closing in on them. He quickly realizes he has to return to the Archangel and requests that Flay come with him. Reluctantly, she agrees.
Back on the Archangel, the team is prepping for battle, but their main weapons system is offline due to damage sustained in the previous battles. In desperation, the captain authorizes the use of a risky and untested plan to launch the ship's shuttle as a missile. The team launches the shuttle, and it strikes its target, taking out one of the ZAFT battleships.
As the battle rages on, Kira struggles to control his emotions and activate his coordinator abilities. He manages to fire a shot from the Strike's beam rifle, but it misses the actual target. Despite his failure, he is splashed by the explosion of the impacted shot, and it triggers a flashback to a traumatic event he experienced as a child, leaving him shaken.
The episode's final scene has the Archangel crew standing on their ship, victorious but exhausted from the battle. Kira and Flay silently look out into space, each contemplating their roles in the ongoing conflict.
In conclusion, Gundam SEED Season 1 Episode 7: The Scars of Space continues the series' blend of action, political intrigue, and character drama. The tactical battle sequences showcase the creative use of mecha in a space battle, while the character moments explore the relationships and inner conflicts among the Archangel crew. The episode serves as a significant development for Kira and Flay and sets up future plot points in the series.
