Ep 5. Bewildered Heartbeat

In episode 5 of Fushigi Yugi, titled Bewildered Heartbeat, Miaka and Tamahome’s growing affection for each other is threatened when Tamahome’s past comes back to haunt him. A mysterious assassin sneaks into the palace to track down Tamahome, whose true identity has now been discovered. Meanwhile, Yui has returned to the real world and is struggling to come to terms with what has happened to her friend in the book.

As Tamahome tries to avoid being killed, he confides in Miaka about his past as a bandit and how he was forced to commit terrible crimes in order to survive. Despite their love for each other, Miaka struggles with the revelation, unsure if she can accept Tamahome’s past actions.

They soon discover that the assassin is not working alone and is being aided by someone within the palace. As they try to uncover the traitor’s identity, Tamahome finds himself battling the assassin in a fierce fight to the death.
