Fushigi Yugi is an anime series that aired from 1995 to 2002. The show was produced by Studio Pierrot and directed by Hajime Kamegaki. It is based on a manga series written and illustrated by Yuu Watase. The show aired in Japan as "Fushigi Yuugi" and was released in the United States as "Mysterious Play" due to copyright issues.

The show follows the story of a 15-year-old girl named Miaka Yuki who is transported into a magical world while reading a mysterious book called "The Universe of the Four Gods". The book is said to grant the wishes of the person who reads it and transport them to a magical world that exists within its pages. Miaka becomes the Priestess of Suzaku, one of the four gods of this mythical land, and must gather the seven Celestial Warriors in order to summon Suzaku and save the world from destruction.

As the Priestess of Suzaku, Miaka has access to incredible powers, but also makes enemies of those who wish to use the power for their own ends. She is joined on her quest by her best friend Yui Hongo, who is also transported into the book and becomes the Priestess of Seiryu, one of the other four gods. The two friends are separated by their allegiances to different gods and must navigate their way through a world filled with danger and intrigue.

The Celestial Warriors are seven men who are chosen by the god Suzaku to serve the Priestess and help her on her journey. Each warrior is assigned a different task, and they all have unique personalities and abilities. There is Tamahome, who is fiercely loyal to Miaka and becomes her love interest; Hotohori, the emperor of the kingdom who is in love with Miaka and serves as a father figure to her; Nuriko, a cross-dressing warrior who starts off as an enemy but becomes one of Miaka's closest friends; and Chichiri, a powerful warrior who often speaks in proverbs.

As Miaka and her companions travel through the magical world, they encounter a number of obstacles that they must overcome in order to fulfill their mission. There are rival gods who seek to disrupt their plans, as well as other priestesses who are competing for control of the universe of the four gods. The show also explores themes of friendship, betrayal, and self-discovery as Miaka learns more about herself and her place in the world.

Overall, Fushigi Yugi is a captivating anime series that combines elements of romance, action, and fantasy. Its unique plotline and relatable characters make it a classic of the genre and a must-watch for anime fans.
