Ep 5. How to Use Your Familiar

In Flying Witch season 1 episode 5, titled How to Use Your Familiar, Makoto and Chinatsu are in the midst of their summer break, but they're not letting that stop them from practising magic. Makoto has a new spell she wants to try out, but she can't do it alone because she needs a familiar to help her cast it.

Makoto's familiar is a cat named Chito, and while he's always around, Makoto realizes she has no idea how to properly use him in her magic spells. She decides it's time to buckle down and learn how to use Chito as her familiar, which will help them both become stronger witches.

Makoto recruits Kei, her older sister, to help her and Chinatsu study up on the proper use of familiars; they even get a book from their relatives to aid in their research. Chito, meanwhile, is getting pretty annoyed with all the studying and practicing, especially since he's not the most cooperative creature to begin with!

Makoto and her friends try out a variety of techniques to get Chito to work with them, but nothing seems to be working. They finally hit on the idea of using food as a motivator, so they start offering Chito tasty treats as a reward for participating in their spellcasting practices.

Eventually, Chito begins to warm up to the idea of being a familiar. He still has his moments of frustration and disobedience, but he's slowly becoming more and more willing to work with Makoto and the others.

In the end, Makoto is able to cast her new spell with Chito's help. It's a great achievement for both of them, and Chito finally starts to see the value of being a familiar (and the perks that come with working with powerful witches).
