Flying Witch is an anime series that focuses on the everyday life of a young witch named Makoto Kowata as she adjusts to living in Aomori with her non-magical cousins. The show is a lighthearted slice-of-life and comedic take on witchcraft and showcases the mundane aspects of Makoto's daily life while at the same time allowing viewers to witness the magic and wonder of the supernatural world.
The main character Makoto is a 15 year-old witch who moves from Yokohama to Aomori to complete her training. She lives with her relatives, Kei and Chinatsu Kagami. Kei is a reserved and laid-back person, in contrast to Chinatsu, who is extremely curious and energetic. The show focuses on the interaction between the characters, and how the normal world and magic world often cross paths in comical and surprising ways.
The series begins with Makoto arriving in Aomori and meeting her cousins for the first time. She shows them a bit of magic, such as flying on a broomstick and using telekinesis, which both amazes and scares them. She also makes friends with some of the locals in town, such as the vegetable vendor, who helps her find ingredients for magic spells.
Throughout the show, Makoto attends the local high school, where she befriends Nao Ishiwatari, a shy classmate who is interested in the supernatural. Together they explore the magical world and go on adventures, such as visiting a spirit shrine or making magical amulets.
The show has a lot of comedic moments, such as when Kei accidentally drinks a potion that turns him into a child or when Chinatsu is chased around by a drone that is controlled by Makoto's magic. Each episode features a new magical discovery, which keeps the show entertaining and interesting.
The animation is very well done, with bright and colorful backgrounds that showcase the beauty of the Aomori countryside. The characters are drawn in a cute and quirky style, which adds to the humor of the show. The soundtrack is light and cheerful, with a mix of gentle piano melodies and lively jazz tunes.
The voice acting is also very good, with Minami Shinoda doing an excellent job as Makoto. She brings a sense of wonder and innocence to the character that is endearing and relatable. Eri Suzuki, who plays Chinatsu, brings a lot of energy and enthusiasm to the show, making her character one of the highlights of the series. Shinsuke Sugawara, as Kei, gives a very laid-back and understated performance that perfectly balances out the more energetic characters.
Overall, Flying Witch is a charming and heartwarming anime that is sure to appeal to fans of supernatural and slice-of-life genres. The show brings a fresh perspective on witchcraft, showcasing the wonder and beauty of magic in a way that is both funny and endearing.
