Makoto Kowata is a teenage witch who has moved to Aomori, a northern prefecture of Japan to complete her training. In episode 3, "Lessons in Gardening and Magic," she is paired with her cousin, Kei Kuramoto, for some gardening work. Kei, who is in elementary school, is thrilled to work with Makoto and help her with the farming chores.

As they start digging in the garden, Makoto uses her magic to accelerate their chores. Despite the ease with which she can complete work using magic, Makoto advises Kei to work on their tasks slowly, saying that the true pleasure of gardening lies in the process. During their gardening work, we get to see Makoto's expertise in gardening. With her unique magic, Makoto can sense the growth of the plants. She knows precisely which spots receive the most sunlight and how to use the surrounding environment to help the plants grow healthily.

Through her interactions with Kei, Makoto teaches us about the importance of observation and patience in gardening and life in general. She explains to Kei the importance of taking time to observe and understand plants. She notes that observing seedlings' behavior can help prepare us for the weather changes and other challenges that come with farming. This idea is not only about plants, but it is also about people. When we take the time to observe and understand people, we can learn about what motivates them and adapt our communication and methods to suit them.

Later in the episode, Makoto loses her magical wand and begins searching for it. Her magical wand is an essential tool for her, and without it, Makoto cannot perform magic. Despite all of her searching, she cannot seem to find the wand. This event teaches us about the value of collaboration and asking for help when we need it. Makoto eventually turns to her family for help.

The Kuramoto family, along with Kei's friends, come together to help Makoto search for the wand. The magical wand may seem insignificant, but it is a vital tool for Makoto's training as a witch. The idea of asking for help and working together is a valuable lesson for all of us. We do not have to do everything on our own, and we should not hesitate to seek out others' help when we are stuck.

The episode concludes with Makoto and Kei providing a home for a famished spirit, known as Harbinger. Harbinger has been causing some troubles around the Kuramoto family farm. She seems to have taken a liking for the Kowata family and decides to stay with them.

In conclusion, "Lessons in Gardening and Magic" is an excellent showcase of Flying Witch's ability to weave in life lessons in an entertaining way. The episode teaches us about the value of observation, patience, and collaboration. Flying Witch has a way of making us appreciate the simple things in life, like gardening and nature. The series is a breath of fresh air and an excellent show for those who need a break from the fast-paced world.
