While Julius, Chris's father, is concerned about the safety of the family, Rochelle, Chris's mother, is more sympathetic towards Jerome, believing he deserves a second chance.
The next day at school, Chris and his friends discuss the arrival of Jerome. One of Chris's friends, Greg, mentions that his uncle was also an ex-convict and that he had a hard time finding employment despite paying his debt to society. When Chris arrives home, he sees Jerome and his Parole Officer, Mr. Thurman, walking towards their house. Julius, who has been monitoring the situation, tries to talk to Mr. Thurman to ensure the family's safety, but the Parole Officer dismisses his concerns, claiming that Jerome has changed.
As the days go by, Jerome's presence in the neighborhood causes tension between some of the neighbors. Some residents organize a petition to have him removed, while others, including Rochelle, believe he deserves a second chance.
During one of his visits to Jerome's house, Chris learns about his criminal past and the events that led to his imprisonment.
