Empress Ki is a historical drama that tells the story of a girl named Ki who was born in Goryeo but was taken to the Mongol Empire as a captive. There, she learns to survive and becomes a skilled warrior. Later, she falls in love with the Emperor of the Mongol Empire, Ta Hwan, and becomes his empress, rising to power and battling enemies to protect her kingdom.
In season 1 episode 12, we see Ki and her army celebrating their victory over the rebels. The Emperor, who has been poisoned, is recuperating, and Ki is caring for him. Despite being weak, he insists on attending the celebration and bringing back the prisoners.
However, the celebration doesn't last long as they soon receive news that the Koryo King is gathering his army to attack the Mongol Empire. The Emperor, unable to lead the army because of his health, appoints Ki to lead the army and defend the kingdom. Getting ready for battle, Ki trains her soldiers, but she also has to deal with internal struggles as some of the soldiers are against her leadership. Her strength and resilience as a leader are put to the test.
Ki's army finally reaches the battlefield to find the Koryo army's troops waiting for them. The battle is gruesome, with both sides losing many lives. Ki shows her courage and strategic mind, leading her troops in the battle, and doesn't back down.
In this episode, viewers can also witness the love triangle between Ki, Ta Hwan, and Wang Yu, the former ruler of Koryo and Ki's childhood friend. Wang Yu's feelings for Ki are being developed in the show, and he is making attempts to win her heart, but Ki is already committed to Ta Hwan.
As the sun rises, Ki's army rises victorious, and they're able to gain control of the battlefield. But soon after, they hear news that there are more rebels, and it appears the real battle has just begun.
Overall, episode 12 of Empress Ki is a thrilling watch, as it showcases the power struggles and battle scenes as well as the romantic stories between the characters. It sets the stage for what's to come in the following episodes and leaves viewers on the edge of their seats.
