In season 4 episode 13 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives titled Doin' Their Own Thing, host Guy Fieri travels to three different restaurants across the United States that pride themselves on being unique and doing things their own way.
The first stop on the episode is a restaurant in Bellevue, Washington called "Chace's Pancake Corral". This quaint breakfast joint has been serving up delicious breakfast dishes for more than 50 years. Guy talks to the owner, who explains that they make their pancakes from scratch every morning using a secret family recipe. Guy samples their classic, chocolate chip and blueberry pancakes and describes them as "light and fluffy". He also tries their savory "garbage omelette" filled with ham, bacon, sausage, onions, peppers, mushrooms, and cheese- a meal so big, it overflows the plate.
Next up is "El Taco De Mexico" in Denver, Colorado. This restaurant has been in operation for over 30 years, and claims to have some of the best tacos in the city. Guy samples a variety of tacos including the "taco al pastor" which features slow-roasted pork with a tangy pineapple salsa. The owner, Anna, explains that they make all of their tortillas by hand every day and that they never use canned ingredients. Guy also tries their "chile relleno" which is stuffed with cheese and smothered in a spicy tomato sauce.
The final stop on the episode is "Buddy's Pizza" in Detroit, Michigan, which has been making award-winning pizzas since 1946. The small family-owned restaurant is famous for their "Detroit-style pizza" which is square-shaped with a thick, crispy crust. The owner, Buddy, explains that they use a unique blend of Wisconsin and Michigan cheeses and that their sauce is made from scratch with California vine-ripened tomatoes. Guy samples their "Quattro Formaggio" pizza, which features a blend of four different cheeses, and their "Detroiter" pizza, which is topped with pepperoni, shaved parmesan cheese, and hot cherry peppers.
Throughout the episode, Guy talks to the owners and staff of each restaurant, learning about their unique histories, recipes, and cooking techniques. He also gives viewers a behind-the-scenes look at each kitchen, showcasing the food preparation and cooking processes. As always, Guy's enthusiasm for food and people shines through in this episode, making for an entertaining and informative viewing experience.
