In season 33 episode 7 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, host Guy Fieri is on a mission to find the best pizza joints in America. The episode is aptly titled Pizza Plus and features some of the most innovative and delicious pizzas from around the country.
Guy begins his journey in San Diego, where he visits The Friendly in Ocean Beach. This pizzeria offers unique and inventive pies that fuse together different flavor profiles and ingredients. Guy samples their popular Scotch Bonnet Margherita pizza that features spicy habanero sauce, fresh mozzarella and basil, and a crispy crust that is cooked to perfection in a wood-fired oven.
Next, Guy heads to Tacoma, Washington, to visit the Cloverleaf Tavern, a restaurant that has been serving up delicious pizza since 1952. Cloverleaf is famous for their unique crust, which is made with sourdough and topped with a three-cheese blend. Guy tries the restaurant's signature Cloverleaf Special pizza, which is topped with salami, pepperoni, mushrooms, and black olives, all piled high on that famous sourdough crust.
From there, Guy travels to Ardmore, Pennsylvania, to visit Pizzeria Beddia, a tiny pizzeria that has quickly gained a reputation for serving up some of the best pies in America. The restaurant only serves a limited number of pizzas each day, and the wait can be long, but the results are worth it. Guy tries the Pepperoni Pizza, which consists of homemade sauce, fresh mozzarella, and perfectly crispy pepperoni.
In Minneapolis, Minnesota, Guy visits Black Sheep Pizza, where they specialize in coal-fired pizzas that are full of flavor. Guy tries the Sausage and Kale pizza, which features spicy sausage, fresh kale, and a healthy dose of garlic. The crust is crispy and crunchy, and the pizza is served piping hot straight from the oven.
Finally, Guy travels to Richmond, Virginia, to visit Pupatella, an authentic Neapolitan pizzeria that has won multiple awards for its delicious pizza. This family-run restaurant imports its ingredients from Italy, including the tomatoes, cheese, and flour used in the pizza dough. Guy samples the Margherita Pizza, which is made with fresh tomato sauce, mozzarella, and basil, and cooked in a 900-degree wood-fired oven.
Throughout the episode, Guy explores the unique and innovative styles of pizza being created across the United States, from classic New York-style pies to more unconventional creations. He meets with passionate chefs who use high-quality ingredients and creative techniques to craft truly unforgettable pizzas.
