In season 31 episode 3 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, host Guy Fieri explores restaurants that offer handheld dishes that are both satisfying and easy to eat on the go. First up is an Indianapolis joint that serves up all types of grilled cheese sandwiches, from classic to creative combinations like mac and cheese grilled cheese and a pulled pork grilled cheese with coleslaw. Next, Guy travels to a family-owned restaurant in San Antonio that specializes in homemade sausage. The sausage comes in endless variety, including chicken and green chili, wild boar, and spicy beef jalapeno cheddar. On the side, the restaurant serves up unique twists on classic southern sides like sweet potato tater tots and deep-fried cole slaw balls.
The third spot is in Denver, where Guy visits a soul food restaurant that combines both southern and Caribbean flavors in their handheld dishes. Their standout item is the Jamaican jerk chicken wings, which come in a variety of spice levels and are accompanied by a homemade blue cheese dressing. The restaurant also serves up classic southern sides like mac and cheese and collard greens, as well as Caribbean staples like fried plantains.
In the final stop, Guy goes to a Nashville restaurant that offers up creative twists on classic hot chicken sandwiches. The menu includes items like a hot chicken grilled cheese and a hot chicken Philly cheesesteak. The restaurant also offers up unique side dishes like cornmeal dusted fried pickles and a sweet and spicy slaw.
Throughout the episode, Guy also meets with the owners and chefs of each spot, learning about their unique backgrounds and the stories behind the dishes they create. Handy Helpings is a mouth-watering journey through handheld dishes that prove some of the best food can be enjoyed with just one hand.
