In season 30 episode 7 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, host Guy Fieri hits up some of the best spots for sandwiches in the Southern and South of the Border regions. The episode begins with Fieri heading to Columbia, South Carolina to check out a sandwich shop that offers unique takes on classics, including a turkey club with fried green tomatoes and pimiento cheese.
Next up, Fieri heads to San Antonio, Texas to visit a restaurant that combines Southern comfort food with Mexican flavors. Here, he tries their famous fried chicken sandwich with chipotle aioli and avocado.
Continuing the Southern theme, Fieri travels to Birmingham, Alabama to sample a pimento cheese sandwich with house-made bacon jam. He then makes his way to a Memphis, Tennessee establishment for a meatball sub topped with fried jalapeños.
Moving south of the border, Fieri visits a taqueria in Austin, Texas for a torta filled with shredded pork and beans. He also stops by a restaurant in Phoenix, Arizona to try a Sonoran hot dog topped with pico de gallo and queso fresco.
The episode culminates in Los Angeles, California where Fieri visits a Cuban cafe for a sandwich filled with pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard. In true Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives fashion, Fieri also get a taste of some of the restaurant’s other specialties, including plantain chips and ropa vieja.
Throughout the episode, Fieri highlights the unique ingredients and techniques used by each restaurant to create their signature sandwiches. Viewers are sure to be inspired to seek out their own versions of these delicious dishes or hit the road and visit these iconic eateries.
