Close Enough season 2 episode 4 named Haunted Couch/Man Up takes the audience through the thrilling and crazy experience of the couple, Josh and Emily, as they tried to replace their old, tired couch with a supernatural story surrounding it.
Haunted Couch starts with the couple's struggle to dispose of their old couch. It's been their much-loved furniture, and despite all the wear and tear, it's been a part of their nostalgic memories. However, the new couch that they ordered failed to deliver, leaving them with no choice but to keep their antique piece. But when Josh and Emily pay a visit to the antique shop, they learn that their couch is supposedly haunted, causing them to think twice about keeping it.
The episode takes an unexpected turn when the couch starts to make strange noises and moves on its own. Emily and Candice, Josh's best friend, believe the story, and they try to convince Josh that the couch needs to go. But Josh being a skeptic, laughed off the idea and became curious about the story's authenticity. Hence, he sets up the camera to get some video footage of the couch, but nothing unusual shows up in the footage.
Josh wanted to make a point that his wife and her friend were overreacting when they heard someone knocking at the door. The door revealed an old lady with the exact story that was told at the store. The lady even had the same mysterious object that was supposed to have been attached to the couch. Emily believes the old lady's story, which makes Josh feel threatened by their fear.
Josh, who is often found to be quirky with his ways, decides to put on a show at the Halloween party they are hosting to convince Emily that the story was bogus. Dressing up like a ghost, he made sure the couch seemed like it was haunted. However, in the process, he scares himself more than he intended. What follows is a hilarious and action-packed scene with mad chases in the dark, where the couple and their friends try to catch the man that they think is the intruder.
The second part of Episode 4, Man up, has much to do with Josh's masculinity that comes at stake when he robs a convenience store to purchase some medicine for his sick daughter. The store owner threatens him to come and pay for the medicine. The couple's friend, Alex, comes in as a spokesperson for Josh by portraying him to the store owner as a man who is already going through a lot in his life.
In the meantime, Emily feels that Josh doesn't take things seriously, and he doesn't fit in the traditional 'man's job' idea. She wants Josh to be the hero of the family like her father, who took care of everything single-handedly. However, things only get worse when Josh's insecurity gets the better of him.
With Alex's help, Josh turns MacGyver and tries to fix an old bike to prove that he is capable and strong. But when he rallies it up to show his family, the bike breaks off, leaving him bruised and incapacitated, which only leads Emily to feel worse about Josh's abilities.
However, as the end comes near, Josh realizes that 'being a man' means taking responsibility for his mistakes and being there for the people he loves, traits he has been doing unknowingly every day. Man up is a happy ending that leaves the couple more secure in their relationship, the family bond growing stronger, and the audience rolling with laughter.
The episode combines the spooky supernatural tale of the haunted couch, quirky humor, and the importance of being responsible for oneself, culminating in a fun-filled show that's perfect to watch with family and friends.
