In Always a Witch season 1 episode 2, we'll see Carmen get used to life in 2019 by trying to fit in with modern society. After being transported from the 17th century and landing in modern-day Colombia, Carmen finds herself struggling to navigate the complexities of modern life. One of her main struggles is getting used to the power dynamic shift between the races, where now Afro-Colombians are not considered slaves anymore.
In this episode, Carmen makes an uncomfortable discovery. One line of her family is involved in the slave trade. This news comes as a shock to Carmen since she has always taken pride in her family history and their devotion to fighting the slave trade. However, against all odds, Carmen keeps the news to herself.
On top of that, Carmen faces a new struggle living in this century: romance. She is drawn to a college student named Cristobal, who becomes the object of her affection. However, their fledgling relationship is put into jeopardy once Carmen discovers that he is the grandson of the woman who stipulates that Carmen become Cristobal's slave.
Pressed into a corner by her situation and love, Carmen finds herself wondering about the decisions she is making. The tension between the families continues to boil. The upcoming election and her little-known family background present a new challenge for Carmen.
Throughout the episode, the audience will see Carmen develop new insights on life, and how to navigate through the difficult waters of modern society. Her transition from the 17th century to modern-day Colombia has been a bumpy one, but Carmen is determined to make the best of the situation. Will she be successful in her mission to protect herself and become emancipated from slavery? Will she be able to maintain her peculiar interest in Cristobal without the interference of their families?
