Retsuko is a cute and seemingly harmless red panda who works a mundane office job in Tokyo, but there's more to her than meets the eye. In the first episode of Aggretsuko, aptly titled "A Day in the Life of Retsuko," we get a glimpse into her daily routine and the frustrations she faces.
As the day begins, Retsuko wakes up early to prepare lunch for herself and her co-workers. She meticulously packs each item in a bento box, trying to make it both healthy and satisfying. Despite her efforts, her colleagues tease her about it, and she can't help but feel a little embarrassed.
Once she arrives at work, things start to get chaotic. Her boss, a sexist and tyrannical hog named Ton, constantly berates her and her peers for not working hard enough. He even scolds Retsuko for having a phone call with her mom during lunch break.
Speaking of lunch break, Retsuko is once again the target of her co-workers' teasing. They invite her to go out to eat with them, but when they realize she brought her own food, they laugh and call her "cheap." She awkwardly agrees to go with them anyway, but as they sit down to eat, one of them spills curry on her blouse. It's the last straw for Retsuko, who quietly leaves the restaurant to scream out her frustrations in a nearby karaoke booth.
It's not until her karaoke session that we see Retsuko's true nature. Gone is the demure and meek demeanor she displays at work; instead, she unleashes a hardcore heavy metal song about the harsh realities of office life. She sings about wanting to break free from the monotony and the jerks she has to deal with on a daily basis.
As the episode comes to a close, we see Retsuko back at work, still dealing with her awful boss and co-workers. But now we know she has an outlet for her frustrations, and we can't wait to see how she uses it in future episodes.
Overall, "A Day in the Life of Retsuko" sets the scene for the rest of the series and introduces us to a lovable and relatable protagonist. It's a hilarious and all-too-real look at the struggles of being a young professional in a soul-sucking job. Whether or not you're a fan of anime, everyone can appreciate the humor and heart of Aggretsuko.
