When plans for an "Ant-Man" movie were announced, not many people even knew who the superhero was, and that fact probably goes a long way toward explaining why there's little negative fan outcry over the casting of a comedic actor in the role.

The summer of the horror movie kicked off in June of 2013 when "The Purge," a thriller made with a tiny budget, turned into a surprise box-office smash. Success like that can't be ignored, and a sequel to "The Purge" is one of at least two violent home-invasion movies due to debut next summer.

It's Christmas time at the box office, and things are getting busy. This weekend, Bilbo Baggins is joined by Ron Burgundy, Walt Disney, Jennifer Lawrence and talking dinosaurs, and the pre-Christmas battle for ticket sales will begin in earnest.

NBC knew that a rerun of its "The Sound of Music Live!" wouldn't draw as many viewers as the first airing of the production did, but the network was probably hoping for something better than a ratings drop of more than 80%.

Plenty of movie-goers dashed through the snow this weekend to see "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug," but not as many as bought tickets for the first "Hobbit" film last year. Yet it's impossible to call a movie that grosses over $70 million on its opening weekend a failure.
