The kids are out of school and parents are desperate to get them out of the house, so it makes sense that the most popular family movie currently in theaters would take the top spot on the weekend after Christmas. But once the young ones are taken care of, the box-office race is wide open, and there is a big field of contenders jockeying for position.

Remember the days when all a young musical performer had to do was throw together a concert documentary and then sit back and watch fans gobble it up? Apparently a successful music doc isn't so easy to pull off any more. These days, taking off your clothes and rolling around on a bed seems to work much better.

When they're shopping for Christmas gifts, consumers are apparently more willing to shell out cash for a newly released DVD than they are to buy a theater ticket for the same movie. That could explain why "The Lone Ranger" was one of the top-selling videos when it hit stores just before the holiday.
