Zach Stone, an ambitious high school graduate, has made the decision to forgo college and pursue a career in entertainment. He wants to become a celebrity, and his plan is to document every step of his journey with the hope of one day creating a reality show that will make him famous. Zach enlists his sister, who is an aspiring filmmaker, to help him capture his life on camera. A lot of the focus of the first episode is on Zach's search for a first big break, as he navigates his way through various auditions and interviews.
Zach's parents are concerned about his decision to not go to college, and his father especially worries about Zach's future. However, Zach is unwavering in his determination to become a star. He attends a job fair in hopes of finding a way into the entertainment industry, but the only booth that takes interest in him is one for a pest control company. Zach spends the day dressed as a giant bug, attempting to drum up business for the company, all the while dreaming of one day being on the other side of the camera.
Later, Zach auditions for a role in a local commercial. His sister films the audition, which ultimately does not go well. Zach is humiliated when the casting director tells him that he's not right for the part. Zach's sister consoles him and reminds him that rejection is part of the process, and they continue to film as he searches for his next opportunity.
Zach also tries his hand at being a magician, performing magic tricks on the street and filming the reactions of unsuspecting passersby. While Zach is excited about his newfound skills, he quickly realizes that he is not cut out for this line of work either. His sister reminds him that becoming famous is not easy, and that he needs to be patient and persistent in order to achieve his goals.
As the episode progresses, it becomes clear that Zach is not necessarily talented or interesting enough to become a celebrity on his own. He is willing to do just about anything to get attention and filming himself doing mundane activities such as eating a sandwich or sitting on the couch in his underwear.
The episode ends with Zach enlisting the help of his friends to stage a fake proposal to his girlfriend, who is unaware that it is all part of his plan to get famous. The proposal goes viral, and suddenly Zach's dream is within reach. He imagines what life will be like when he has his own television show, his face on magazine covers, and is recognized wherever he goes.
Overall, the first episode sets up the premise for the rest of the series. Zach's quest for fame is both endearing and cringe-worthy, as he puts himself out there again and again in the hopes of catching a break. The show is a mix of comedy and drama, with moments that are both funny and insightful. It is an interesting look at the culture of celebrity and the lengths that some people will go to in order to achieve it.
