In Z Nation, season four, episode nine - We Interrupt This Program - The episode opens on a news broadcast from before the outbreak. The anchor reads through headlines and the usual news stories, until a “breaking news” update comes through – a man attacked a nurse at a hospital. It’s a small story, but little do they know that this is the beginning of the zombie outbreak.
We then jump back into the present day where we see Warren and the gang driving through Spokane in the aftermath of the drone strike that took out the city’s Grizzly-P and essentially wiped out all the zombies in the city. As they’re driving, however, a news broadcast on the radio interrupts their music.
The news anchor, Marcus Mayhem, is giving a report on a new “miracle” vaccine that’s been developed by Doctor Merch, a researcher working at a lab in Illinois. Mayhem hypes the vaccine up, claiming that it will cure anyone infected by the virus and prevent them from turning into a zombie.
The news report is interrupted, however, by a call from Doctor Merch himself, who warns Mayhem that the vaccine is not what it appears to be. He claims that it’s actually a virus that turns the infected into “something worse than zombies,” and that anyone who takes it will be doomed.
Meanwhile, back in Spokane, Warren and the gang find themselves surrounded by a group of survivors led by a woman named Officer Schulz. Schulz has gathered a group of military personnel and is trying to keep her people alive in the aftermath of the drone strike.
Schulz is skeptical of the news report about the vaccine, but Warren and the others decide to investigate the lab anyway. They head out on foot and come across a group of survivors who are being attacked by zombies. They manage to save the group, but one of them, a woman named Lily, is bitten in the process.
The group eventually arrives at the lab and find it abandoned. There’s a note from Doctor Merch warning them not to take the vaccine, but a group of bandits show up and demand that they turn it over. A fight breaks out and the gang is able to hold their own, but not before one of the bandits takes the vaccine and turns into a monstrous new type of zombie.
Warren and the gang manage to escape the lab and make their way back to Spokane, but not before they’re attacked by the new type of zombie. They return to Schulz’s camp, where they try to convince her and her people that the vaccine is dangerous and that they should avoid it at all costs.
The episode concludes with Warren and company coming across a convoy headed to the vaccine’s distribution center. They realize that they have to stop it before the virus can be spread any further, setting up what promises to be an action-packed finale.
