In the eighth episode of season four of Z Nation, titled "Crisis of Faith," the gang's convoy is halted by a priest standing in the middle of the road. The team is surprised to find out that the priest, Father Romanov, had been keeping a group of survivors safe in his church and convinced them to wait for a divine rescue.
Murphy, being the only known survivor to have been bitten by a zombie but not turned, is hailed as a messiah by Father Romanov and some of the survivors. Murphy knows that he is not divine and is only a man with an immunity, but Romanov's followers are zealous in their beliefs and see him as their only hope for a cure. They implore Murphy to help them in their quest to find a sanctuary.
The mission to find the sanctuary proves to be more complicated than they first expected, when they have to deal with a group of zombified cult members that had previously raided and killed Father Romanov's previous flock, and are now occupying the church. The team must navigate through the labyrinthine tunnels beneath the church and face the dangers they encounter along the way.
As they progress, it becomes clear that the recent events have shaken everyone's faith, including Doc and 10k, who have lost friends and loved ones to the zombie apocalypse. The group must confront the question of whether or not their faith in humanity and hope for a cure is misplaced, or if there really is a chance for salvation.
Through it all, Murphy finds himself having to weigh his own moral choices and ethics, as he struggles to maintain his own sense of identity and humanity. With the help of Addy, Warren, and the rest of the team, Murphy's journey becomes one of self-discovery and true responsibility, as he begins to understand the gravity of his actions and the impact they have on others.
"Crisis of Faith" is an episode that delves deep into what it truly means to have faith, hope, and belief in something greater than oneself. It is an episode that tests the characters' limits and beliefs, as they face the harshest of challenges and come out stronger, both as individuals and as a team.
