Ep 9. Duel With a Ghoul

Yugi and his friends manage to meet up, compared notes, a plan to help rescue Joey. However, once Joey sees his friends, he decides he doesn't want to wait for their help and insists he can handle the ghoul on his own. Yugi understands this since dueling has personal meaning for both of them. Yugi gives Joey trust and tells Joey that he has the power of friends in him that can never falter.

As Joey and the ghoul continue to battle, the ghoul reveals that he is not just any ghost but was once a famous Duelist named "Bonz" who cheated and was discovered, thus losing his career. He had since died but had resorted to tricks to continue to haunt the world of Duel Monsters. Bonz cheats by using his trick cards in the game, and in desperation, Joey tries to use his powerful Red Eyes Black Dragon card. But Bonz's Underworld Deck has cards powerful enough to seal his Red Eyes.

However, with the support of his friends watching from behind, Joey gains the strength to battle hard and triumph over Bonz, as Bonz fades away to ghosts. With the close call behind them, Yugi and his friends gather to honor the dead they had met in the beginning. Although it is evident that Bonz had intended to dishonor the world of Duel Monsters, Joey leads them in all agreeing to play their Duel Monsters cards as an expression of respect for the dead.

The episode ends with a touching musical performance by Mai, the traveling duelist, as she sings over the graves of those lost. In general, this episode focused on Joey's passion for Duel Monsters and how it makes him strong, as well as Yugi's friendship, trust, and support to his friend. It also explored how Duel Monsters, as a game, can be used for good and evil, as evidenced by Bonz's use of trickery and Joey's ability to use it to express grief.
