In the fourth episode of season two of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, titled "Sad but Turesdale," the story follows a new character, Jim Crocodile Cook, a brilliant duelist who rarely loses a match. He's known for his signature card, Crocodile Token, which can't be destroyed in battle. Jim is also a close friend to one of the academy's professors, Lyman Banner.
The episode begins with Jaden Yuki and his friends arriving at the school's lake, where they find Jim fishing. Jaden challenges him to a duel, impressed by his reputation, but Jim refuses. Instead, he tells them about how he's been having trouble sleeping at night due to strange dreams, which Jaden and his friends suspect might be related to shadow duels.
Meanwhile, Professor Banner receives a message from his brother, Thelonious, who he hasn't seen in years. Thelonious invites him to a special dueling event at an abandoned tower. Banner tells the students that he wants to go, but he's worried about his brother's safety. He asks Jim and Jaden to come with him for support.
At the tower, they encounter an unusual group of duelists, all of whom wear masks to conceal their identities. Banner recognizes one of them as his brother and tries to talk to him, but Thelonious refuses to take off his mask. Instead, he challenges Banner to a shadow duel. If Banner wins, his brother will reveal his face and explain why he's been absent for so long.
The duel begins, and Banner pulls out all the stops, but it's not enough to defeat his brother. To make matters worse, Thelonious summons out a powerful monster from his graveyard that Banner recognizes as Turesdale, a card that's been banned from tournaments for years due to its destructive power.
As the duel progresses, it becomes clear that the shadow duelist is not Thelonious, but rather an imposter using his deck. Jim deduces that the imposter must be someone who's been watching the Banner brothers for a long time, someone who knows every strategy they have. In the end, they discover that the culprit is none other than a former student of the academy named Guardian Baou, who claims to have been cheated by Banner in the past.
The episode ends with Jim and Jaden teaming up to defeat Baou in a friendly tag duel, demonstrating the power of trust and friendship in the world of Yu-Gi-Oh!. The story of "Sad but Turesdale" is a perfect example of how the narrative of the series balances intense action, complex character development, and heartwarming friendship in a seamless and highly engaging way.
