Joe is on edge after Beck's ex-boyfriend, Benji, goes missing. The last time he saw Benji, he had locked him in the bookstore's basement to keep him away from Beck. But when Joe gets a text from Benji's phone asking to meet up, he becomes even more anxious. Meanwhile, Candace, Joe's ex-girlfriend who he thought he had killed, shows up in New York City, and Joe becomes paranoid that she will expose him.
As Joe tries to keep track of Beck's whereabouts and deal with Candace's unexpected reappearance, his mental state begins to unravel. He starts to hallucinate and sees Candace everywhere he goes. He becomes paranoid that she is watching him and trying to sabotage his relationship with Beck. In a panic, Joe goes to the police station and confesses to killing Candace, hoping that the charges will protect him from her.
Throughout the episode, flashbacks reveal more about Joe and Candace's relationship. It turns out that Candace was the one who broke up with him, not the other way around, and that Joe had become obsessed with her after the breakup. He had followed her to New York City and started stalking her, which ultimately led to her confronting him about his behavior.
When Candace shows up in the flesh, Joe is shocked and confused. He had thought he had killed her, but it turns out that she had just left town to get away from him. She confronts him about his behavior and warns him to stay away from her and Beck.
Meanwhile, Beck is dealing with her own issues. She had received a call from her estranged father, who wants to reconcile after years of being absent. She is conflicted about whether or not to meet with him, and Joe tries to convince her that her father is not worth her time.
The episode ends with a cliffhanger, as Joe receives a phone call from a mysterious woman who claims to know his secrets. It is unclear who this woman is or what she wants, but it is clear that Joe's world is about to get even more complicated.
