Joe Goldberg is an unassuming bookstore manager in Manhattan who leads a simple life with few people in his inner circle. However, things start to change when a beautiful woman named Beck walks into the bookstore. Joe becomes immediately infatuated with her, and goes to great lengths to find out as much as he can about her including following her on social media and tracking her down at a party she attends.
As he begins to delve deeper into her life, he realizes that Beck has a perfect facade despite struggling with deeper, darker issues. Joe begins to believe that he is the only one who can save Beck, and becomes obsessed with protecting her at all costs. He starts to manipulate his way into her life, using his intelligence and cunning to get closer to her, all the while maintaining his seemingly mundane existence to the outside world.
Meanwhile, Joe's past comes back to haunt him as his ex-girlfriend Candace appears, threatening to reveal dark secrets that he has been carefully hiding. As he navigates his complicated love life and attempts to keep his secrets from being exposed, Joe's obsession with Beck grows stronger, leading him down a dangerous path where the lines between love and insanity become blurred.
