You, Me and the Apocalypse is a British-American television series that premiered on NBC in 2015. The show was created by Iain Hollands and starred Mathew Baynton, Jenna Fischer, and Joel Fry in lead roles. The show primarily revolved around a group of characters who found themselves caught up in the final days of humanity as an asteroid headed towards Earth, threatening to wipe out all life.
The series opened with the announcement of a comet set to hit Earth in 34 days' time, and followed the stories of several individuals whose lives were impacted by the impending doomsday. The central character of the show was Jamie Winton (played by Mathew Baynton), a hapless bank manager who discovered he had a twin brother he had never met. His brother, Ariel (also played by Baynton), was a dangerous hacker who had been imprisoned for years, and who possessed information that could save the world from the impending apocalypse.
As Jamie tried to track down his twin, he met a number of other people whose lives were caught up in the chaos. There was Rhonda McNeil (Jenna Fischer), a mild-mannered librarian who was wrongly accused of a serious crime; Father Jude (Rob Lowe), a priest who was struggling with his faith and trying to help wherever he could; and Celine (Gaia Scodellaro), a young nun who began to suspect she might be the key to preventing the end of the world.
Meanwhile, in a bunker in the middle of nowhere, a group of people had been selected to survive the apocalypse thanks to the foresight of a wealthy businessman, all of whom had their own secrets and problems. As the date of the comet approached, tensions rose and relationships were put to the test as everyone tried to figure out what the future held.
You, Me and the Apocalypse was a darkly humorous take on the end of the world, with a focus on character-driven stories rather than special effects or action sequences. The show was known for its quirky tone, shifting between absurdist humor and emotional drama as the story unfolded.
One of the strengths of the show was its ensemble cast, with each member of the large cast getting their own moment to shine. Mathew Baynton was a standout in his dual role as Jamie and Ariel, showcasing both his comedic and dramatic acting skills. Jenna Fischer was also excellent as Rhonda, bringing warmth and empathy to her character's struggles.
The show was not without its flaws, however; some viewers found the show's tonal shifts jarring, and the storylines occasionally felt disjointed. The show also struggled in the ratings, and was cancelled after its first and only season, leaving some storylines unresolved.
Despite its short run, You, Me and the Apocalypse has remained a cult favorite among fans who appreciated its unique blend of humor and heart. The show tackled weighty themes like faith, redemption, and human connection in a refreshing and original way, cementing its place as one of the most memorable apocalyptic dramas of recent years.
You, Me and the Apocalypse is a series that ran for 1 seasons (10 episodes) between January 28, 2016 and on NBC
