In episode 2 of season 1 of Yo-kai Watch, titled "The One in the Water; Why Did You Say That?; Katie's Secret," we see the young protagonist, Nate, continue to navigate the world of yōkai, or supernatural spirits, that are invisible to most humans.
The first segment of the episode, "The One in the Water," follows Nate as he tries to prove to his skeptical friend, Eddie, that yōkai exist. He takes Eddie to a riverside spot where he's heard rumors of a mischievous yōkai hiding. After some searching, they do indeed encounter a yōkai - the eel-like Jibanyan - who seems to be causing trouble for some nearby fishermen. Nate realizes that Jibanyan is struggling because he can't swim, and the fishermen have pulled him out of the water multiple times. After working together to help Jibanyan learn to swim, the boys wonder if Eddie will now believe in yōkai - but he remains unconvinced.
The second segment, "Why Did You Say That?," sees Nate accidentally blurting out an insult to his friend Bear while playing soccer, causing Bear to storm off in anger. Nate feels terrible and seeks the advice of his mentor, the yōkai Whisper. Whisper introduces him to the Apelican yōkai, who specializes in apologies. Apelican teaches Nate some techniques for making a heartfelt apology, and with Whisper's encouragement, Nate successfully makes amends with Bear.
The final segment, "Katie's Secret," focuses on Nate's classmate, Katie, and her habit of rambling on endlessly about her "secret project." When Nate manages to catch a glimpse of the project, though, he realizes that it's just a simple craft project and wonders why Katie is so secretive about it. He discovers that Katie is worried about being judged by others, and doesn't want to reveal something she cares about and potentially be laughed at. With the help of Jibanyan and Whisper, Nate stages a "secret project" contest to encourage Katie to show off her work and feel proud of it.
Overall, this episode highlights the importance of empathy, understanding, and helping others. It also continues to introduce viewers to the strange and fascinating world of yōkai and the role they play in human lives.
