Ep 16. Greg's New Friend

  • February 25, 2002

Greg and Jimmy decide to go to a baseball game on Saturday. While Greg is excited about the outing, Kim is irritated about their plans because they are supposed to attend a baby shower for one of her friends on the same day. Sensing Kim's annoyance, Greg invites the couple over for dinner on Friday night to make up for their absence at the shower.

At work, Greg meets a co-worker named Terry who is new in town. Greg sympathizes with Terry, who has no friends in the area, and decides to invite him over for dinner as well. That evening, when Jimmy gets home from work, he is surprised to find out that they will be having another guest. Jimmy expresses his displeasure and reminds Greg that people can be weird and that they shouldn't just invite anyone over for dinner.

During dinner, Terry proves to be a great guest, telling funny stories about his life and sharing his appreciation for Greg's cooking. Jimmy, however, is not comfortable around Terry and can't seem to find common ground with him. Kim also seems to be bothered by the fact that Greg invited someone they barely know over for dinner.

Over the next few days, Greg and Terry spend more time together, much to Jimmy's annoyance. One night, after a long day at work, Jimmy comes home to find Greg and Terry sitting in the living room discussing different sci-fi movies. Frustrated, Jimmy tells them that he has to go to bed and suggests that Terry should leave. Greg is upset by Jimmy's behavior and pleads with him to be nicer to Terry.

The following Saturday, while Greg and Jimmy are at the baseball game, they run into Terry with another man. Greg introduces Jimmy to Terry's friend, Rick, but Jimmy is immediately suspicious of Rick's intentions. Later, when Terry calls to invite Greg to hang out with him, Jimmy convinces Greg to decline the offer and to promise not to go over to Terry's house anymore.

Kim, happy that Terry is out of the picture, prepares for the baby shower, but when the couple arrives, Greg is nowhere to be found. After calling and texting him multiple times, Kim begins to worry. When Greg finally arrives home, he reveals that he had a great time hanging out with Terry and Rick, and that they had gone to a bar. Kim is furious that he skipped out on the shower and even more upset that he went out with Terry and Rick after Jimmy's objections.

The episode concludes with Greg and Jimmy having another argument about Terry and their different approaches to friendship. Jimmy acknowledges that he may have overreacted, but affirms that he doesn't trust Terry and insists that Greg distance himself from him. Greg, on the other hand, wants to be more open to meeting new people and expanding his social circle.
