In Yakitate!! Japan season 1 episode 1, titled "He Has Arrived!! The Boy Who Possesses Solar Hands!", we are introduced to Kazuma Azuma, a young boy with a passion for bread-making. Kazuma grew up in a family of rice farmers but was inspired by the bread his grandfather brought back from Tokyo. He decides to pursue his dreams of becoming a "Ja-pan," a baker who creates a uniquely Japanese bread.
Kazuma sets out to Tokyo to gain experience working in a bakery, but his inexperience shows. He is quickly turned away from the first bakery he tries to join. However, he is not discouraged and ends up stumbling upon the Pantasia bakery, which is one of the most prestigious bakeries in Japan. Due to a series of comedic misunderstandings, Kazuma ends up in a bread-making competition against Kyosuke Kawachi, one of Pantasia's top bakers.
During the competition, we see Kazuma's unique abilities when it comes to bread-making, which sets him apart from others. His hands possess "solar hands," which are said to generate heat when rubbed together, which is an essential part of bread-making. This gift is rare and valuable in the baking world.
Kyosuke, initially skeptical of Kazuma's abilities, realizes how talented he is after the bread competition. He sees the potential in him and decides to mentor Kazuma, becoming his sensei. With Kyosuke's guidance, we will get to see Kazuma grow and learn various baking techniques while trying to achieve his ultimate goal of creating an original Japanese bread.
The episode ends with Kazuma successfully securing a place to work at Pantasia and setting off on his journey to become a "Ja-pan" and create a bread that represents the spirit of Japan.
