In Xena: Warrior Princess season 1 episode 2, titled "Chariots of War," Xena and Gabrielle journey to a small town where they find that a warlord named Draco is terrorizing its people and taking their crops. Xena is determined to put a stop to Draco's tyranny, but Gabrielle is hesitant to get involved in any violent confrontation.
As they explore the town, Xena and Gabrielle meet Darius, a former warlord who has since turned to farming. Darius gives them a place to stay and tells them more about Draco and his army of charioteers. Xena begins to devise a plan to defeat Draco, but Gabrielle is still uneasy about the prospect of violence.
Meanwhile, in Draco's lair, the warlord receives word that Xena is in town and prepares his army for battle. He sends his men to attack the town, and Xena and Gabrielle must fight off the invaders to protect the innocent villagers.
In the end, Xena confronts Draco one-on-one in a chariot race – a contest that will determine the fate of the town. The outcome of the race will not only determine whether Draco will continue to terrorize the town, but also whether Xena can find redemption from her violent past.
"Chariots of War" explores themes of violence, redemption, and the power of individual choice. As Xena grapples with her violent past and tries to use her skills for good, Gabrielle struggles to reconcile her own pacifist beliefs with the harsh realities of the world around her. The episode also introduces the character of Darius, who serves as a mentor and guide for Xena as she tries to find a new path in life.
