X Company is an intense Canadian thriller series that first premiered on CBC Television in 2015 and continued for three seasons until 2017. It offers an interesting twist to the World War II genre, following a team of Canadian and European spies working behind enemy lines to thwart dangerous Nazi plans, reveal secrets, and change the course of history.
The show, set between 1942-1943, has a stellar cast led by Evelyne Brochu as Aurora Luft, a brilliant French-Canadian, and Jack Laskey as Alfred Graves, a gifted British cryptographer. Joining them is Warren Brown as Neil Mackay, a skilled commando, Dustin Milligan as Tom Cummings, a jaded American radio expert, Connor Price as Harry James, a young observer and decoder, Hugh Dillon as Duncan Sinclair, their tough but kind mentor, Lara Jean Chorostecki as Krystina Breeland, their beautiful but deadly ally in Poland and Torben Liebrecht as Franz Faber, their Nazi nemesis.
The series puts its own spin on the historical events of World War II by creating a fictional military unit called Camp X, which is a real-life spy school that Winston Churchill established in Ontario, Canada. The show follows a group of handpicked spies who are trained in everything from weapons handling to radio transmissions and sent on risky missions in Europe.
Throughout the series, the lives of the characters are intertwined with historical events such as the invasion of Poland, Operation Overlord, and the planned assassination of Hitler. They work to sabotage V-2 rocket programs, rescue prisoners of war, and uncover critical intelligence about the German army. All this while dealing with the struggles of being undercover, living with false identities, and facing moral dilemmas that test their resolve.
The show's production design and cinematography are excellent, capturing the gritty and realistic tone of the period. The settings are authentic, such as the gloomy forests of Eastern Europe and the polished halls of German headquarters. The costumes and props are accurate, down to the buttons on the uniforms and the radios used for communication. The music score evokes the atmosphere of the era, with themes reminiscent of classic spy movies.
X Company is a character-driven drama, with each member of the ensemble cast bringing their unique skills and personality to the table. Aurora is the heart of the team, the one who can speak multiple languages and is fearless in the face of danger. Alfred is the brains, constantly solving coded messages and devising plans. Neil is the brawn, always ready to engage in physical combat. Tom is the cynic, disillusioned by the war and the covert operations he's involved in. Harry is the innocent, trying to make sense of the horrors he witnesses. Duncan is the boss, a tough but fair leader who cares deeply for his team. Krystina is the seductress, using her femininity to get close to high-ranking Nazi officials. And Franz Faber is the antagonist, a Nazi officer tasked with uncovering the traitors within his own ranks.
Overall, X Company is a gripping drama series that tackles the weighty subject of World War II with a fresh perspective. It's a highly entertaining and educational show, full of suspense, action, and drama. Definitely worth checking out for fans of historical fiction and espionage tales.
