On September 7, 1997, the WWE brought its In Your House pay-per-view series to the Louisville Gardens in Louisville, Kentucky for the 17th edition of the event, titled Ground Zero: In Your House. The event featured a highly anticipated main event between Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker, two of the biggest stars in WWE history.
Shawn Michaels, known as "The Heartbreak Kid," was the reigning WWE Champion heading into the event. Michaels had won the championship from Bret Hart in a controversial match at the previous year's Survivor Series, famously becoming the "most hated man in America" in the process. Michaels had since then been involved in a number of memorable matches and feuds, including a legendary bout with Stone Cold Steve Austin at WrestleMania 14 earlier that year.
The Undertaker, meanwhile, was one of WWE's most iconic figures. Known for his ominous persona, unbeatable aura, and devastating finishing move, the Tombstone Piledriver, The Undertaker had been with the WWE since 1990 and had become a fan favorite over the years. He had been involved in some of the most memorable matches in WWE history, including classic encounters with Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, and Mankind.
The main event of Ground Zero: In Your House saw Michaels defend his championship against The Undertaker in a match that had been building for months. The two had feuded over the summer, with Michaels deliberately getting The Undertaker disqualified in a match at SummerSlam the month before. The storyline saw Michaels claim that he couldn't beat The Undertaker in a fair fight, leading to the stipulation that the match at Ground Zero would be a no disqualification, no countout match.
The match itself was an instant classic, with both Michaels and The Undertaker pulling out all the stops to try and win the championship. Michaels, known for his high-flying moves and daring risk-taking, threw caution to the wind as he tried to take down the larger and more powerful Undertaker. The Undertaker, for his part, displayed his trademark intensity and resiliency, enduring everything Michaels threw at him and dishing out punishment of his own.
The match featured a number of dramatic moments, including Michaels delivering a moonsault from the top rope onto The Undertaker, a move that had never been seen before in WWE. The Undertaker responded by hitting Michaels with a Tombstone Piledriver, but Michaels was able to kick out at the last second, much to the shock of the crowd. The match then spilled out of the ring, with Michaels and The Undertaker brawling all around the arena before finally making their way back to the ring.
The finish of the match came when both Michaels and The Undertaker were up on the top rope, fighting for control. Michaels attempted to hit The Undertaker with his finishing move, the Sweet Chin Music, but The Undertaker caught him and hit him with a devastating chokeslam from the top rope. The move was enough to put Michaels down for the count, and The Undertaker became the new WWE Champion.
The match between Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker at Ground Zero: In Your House has gone down in history as one of the greatest matches in WWE history. It showcased both men's incredible talent and athleticism, as well as their ability to tell a compelling story in the ring. The event overall was a fantastic showcase of what makes WWE so captivating, combining athleticism, drama, and larger-than-life characters into a thrilling and unforgettable show.
