In the fourth episode of season two of World's Most Evil Killers, the focus is on the heinous crimes committed by Charles Ng and Leonard Lake. These two men, who became known as the "Serial Killers of Calaveras County," embarked on a killing spree in California in the late 1980s that shocked the nation.
Charles Ng was born in Hong Kong in 1960 and moved to the United States when he was a young man. He had a troubled childhood, with reports of him being bullied and abused at home. Ng joined the Marines as a young adult but was discharged a few years later due to his behavior and multiple thefts on base. He quickly went on to become a notorious criminal, committing countless burglaries, robberies, and even sexual assaults before joining forces with Leonard Lake in the early 1980s.
Leonard Lake was born in San Francisco in 1945 and had a relatively normal childhood. However, he began to exhibit strange behavior in his late teens and dropped out of college after only one semester. He then spent years living off of welfare and committing crimes, including several break-ins and thefts. In 1979, Lake was arrested for firearms violations and served two years in prison.
After they met in the early 1980s, Ng and Lake began to construct a fortified bunker on Lake's remote property in Calaveras County, California. They outfitted the bunker with torture equipment, including a homemade electrocution device and a soundproof chamber. They also compiled a list of potential victims, which included entire families, and began to kidnap and torture people at the bunker.
Over a period of several years, Ng and Lake brutalized and murdered at least twelve people, including men, women, and children. They often recorded the horrific acts on video and played them back for their own sick amusement. Eventually, a former roommate of Lake's became suspicious and contacted authorities, leading to Ng's arrest in 1985. Lake committed suicide shortly after his arrest.
In this episode of World's Most Evil Killers, experts and investigators delve into the twisted minds of Ng and Lake, examining the motivations behind their crimes and the methods they used to lure in victims. Viewers will hear from those who knew the killers, including former law enforcement officials and a woman who narrowly escaped being a victim, and gain insight into the psychological profiles of these two depraved individuals.
As with previous episodes of the show, the focus is on understanding the criminal mind and bringing to light the darkest aspects of human behavior. By exploring the case of Charles Ng and Leonard Lake, the show aims to shed light on the characteristics of serial killers and hopefully prevent such atrocities from happening in the future.
