WordGirl season 1 episode 9, titled "The Birthday Girl / Granny-Sitter," centers on our beloved superhero, WordGirl, as she faces two villains in her city. The first half of the episode, "The Birthday Girl," is all about a young girl named Edith who transforms into a super-powered villain on her birthday. Edith's evil plans include uprooting a park and stealing all of the cake in the city. It's up to WordGirl to thwart her evil schemes and protect the innocent citizens of their town.
When we meet Edith, she is excited to turn six years old but feels disappointed when she realizes that her parents have forgotten her birthday. Feeling alone and unloved, she snaps and transforms into 'The Birthday Girl.' She gains the power to grow in size as she becomes angrier and angrier, causing destruction in the city.
With her gift of super strength, 'The Birthday Girl' uproots a whole park, including its trees and benches, and tries to steal the giant birthday cake at the mayor's birthday bash. But WordGirl arrives just in time to ruin her party-crashing plans. However, WordGirl realizes that Edith's tantrums and outbursts are just her way of dealing with disappointment and isolation.
In the second half of the episode, "Granny-Sitter," WordGirl's duty becomes more challenging as she has to protect Granny May, a notorious villain, from another one of her evil relatives. Granny May's nephew, Durben, is one of WordGirl's long-time enemies. Durben is determined to claim Granny May's inheritance, and he'll stop at nothing to get it.
Determined to carry out his evil plan, Durben pays WordGirl a visit to request permission to take Granny May out for a day. WordGirl agrees, thinking that it could be her chance to keep an eye on both of them and protect Granny May from Durben's evil plan. Although Granny May initially seems to be enjoying her time out with her nephew, WordGirl senses something is off about the situation.
As usual, WordGirl's instincts proved accurate. Durben takes Granny May out to a mall and lures her into entering her own fortune-telling booth. There, he uses his powers to hypnotize her into signing over her estate to him. However, WordGirl manages to stop Durben before it's too late and save Granny May's fortune.
