In the second episode of Wizards of Waverly Place season 1, titled "First Kiss", the Russo siblings are all excited about their upcoming date nights. Justin has a date with a girl named Miranda, Alex has a date with a boy named Dean, and Max is excited to get a kiss from his crush, a girl named Nancy.
Alex is particularly nervous about her date with Dean, and her parents, Jerry and Theresa, try to calm her down by giving her a special charm that will help her have a good date. Meanwhile, Justin is trying to figure out the perfect way to kiss Miranda during their date, and Max is busy practicing his kissing technique on a mannequin in his room.
As the three siblings prepare for their dates, they all run into trouble. Justin accidentally casts a spell that makes Miranda think that he's a bad kisser, ruining his chances of getting a kiss. Alex's charm gets lost and she starts to have a series of bad luck, making her date with Dean a disaster. And Max's attempts to practice kissing become a problem when he accidentally brings the mannequin to life.
Throughout the episode, the siblings have to deal with their own problems while trying to help each other out. Justin tries to figure out how to fix his bad reputation with Miranda, Alex has to find her charm and break her streak of bad luck, and Max has to figure out how to turn the now-alive mannequin back into an object.
The episode treats its young audience to many relatable situations. It captures the awkwardness of first dates and the desire to be the best version of oneself during them. It highlights familial bonds and the importance of having loved ones to turn to in times of need. It also brings in magic without it overshadowing the everyday issues the characters face.
As the siblings find ways to solve their problems, viewers are treated to a story that is both funny and charming. "First Kiss" is not only entertaining but also comforting in a way that lets remind us that everyone has challenges to overcome and that we all need a little help from time to time.
