When it comes to animal battles, some species have some pretty impressive weaponry. From antlers to tusks, animals have evolved all sorts of features to help them compete with one another, but what about necks? In the second season episode of Wild Kratts titled Neck and Neck, Chris and Martin Kratt investigate the importance of necks in the animal kingdom.
The episode begins with Chris and Martin observing two giraffes battling it out with their necks. Giraffes use their long necks and powerful muscles to swing their heads into their opponents with incredible force, but why do they do it? The Kratt brothers explain that the giraffes' necks are weapons, used to establish dominance and secure mating rights. They also point out that neck features are important for many other animal species as well, and decide to investigate further.
Using their creature powers and their trusty Tortuga, the Kratt brothers head off to explore the neck features of different animals. First up are bison, which use their powerful neck muscles to tussle with each other during mating season. The bison's massive heads can weigh up to 2000 pounds, and they can deliver a powerful blow with just a flick of the neck. Chris and Martin put their bison creature powers to the test, but soon find themselves in a heated battle.
Next, the Kratt brothers investigate the neck features of two reptiles: the Komodo dragon and the crocodile. While the Komodo dragon's neck may not look like much, it's incredibly muscular and allows the creature to deliver a deadly bite. The crocodile, on the other hand, uses its long, powerful neck to grab onto and drag its prey into the water. Chris and Martin get up close and personal with both creatures, using their creature powers and state-of-the-art gadgets to avoid becoming lunch.
Moving on to the bird kingdom, the Kratt brothers investigate the neck features of the ostrich and the bald eagle. Ostriches have incredibly long necks that allow them to reach the ground easily, but they also need them to compete with other ostriches during mating season. Bald eagles, on the other hand, have a unique feature called a crop that allows them to store food in their necks while they hunt for more. Chris and Martin use their creature powers to fly with the eagles and run with the ostriches, learning all about their amazing neck features along the way.
Finally, Chris and Martin take a look at the neck features of the world's largest animal, the blue whale. While the blue whale's neck may not be much to look at, it's incredibly powerful and is used to help the whale filter food from the water. The Kratt brothers put their creature powers to the test as they dive deep into the ocean in search of the elusive blue whale.
As always, Wild Kratts teaches kids about the importance of science and nature through fun and engaging storytelling. Neck and Neck is no exception, giving kids an up-close look at the amazing neck features of all sorts of creatures. With incredible creature powers and nifty gadgets, Chris and Martin take kids on a wild adventure they won't soon forget.
