Ep 25. Journey to the Subnivean Zone

While studying snow hares on the tundra, the Wild Kratts discover a secret beneath the snow: a subnivean zone, a network of tunnels and caves where miniature animals live hidden from predators. Intrigued by these tiny creatures, the Kratt brothers decide to shrink themselves down to explore the subnivean world.

With the help of their miniaturizer, Chris and Martin enter the subnivean zone and encounter some of the wildest creatures they’ve ever seen. They meet a shrew who must eat three times her body weight each day just to survive, and a vole who creates tunnels and air vents in the snow to keep her young warm during the harsh winter.

The Kratts follow the tracks of a weasel through the tunnels and come face to face with a family of ermines, a type of weasel known for their white winter coats. The brothers are impressed by the ermines’ hunting skills as they chase after prey in the subnivean world.

While exploring the tunnels, Chris and Martin come across a hidden room: a cache of food stored by a family of red squirrels for the winter. However, the squirrels quickly return, and the Kratts must make a high-stakes escape to avoid being seen.

The Kratts continue their search for the ultimate subnivean predator and come across the Arctic fox, a creature perfectly adapted to the harsh subnivean climate. The brothers observe as the fox hunts for lemmings, and even catch sight of a rare occurrence: an Arctic fox turning white to blend in with the snow.

However, the Kratts’ adventure takes a dangerous turn when a sudden snowstorm leaves them trapped in the subnivean tunnel. With time running out, the brothers must use their quick thinking and knowledge of the subnivean world to find their way back to safety.
