Tony Micelli is a former professional baseball player who moves to Connecticut to work as a live-in housekeeper for Angela Bower, a divorced advertising executive, and her young son Jonathan. The show follows their daily lives and the challenges they face as they navigate their unconventional family dynamic.
In season 2 episode 23, "There's No Business Like Shoe Business," Angela's ad agency is put in charge of a new account for a high-end shoe company. Angela is excited to tackle the new challenge but is met with resistance from the company's owner, Mr. Purvis, who is skeptical of Angela's ability to understand the brand's high-end clientele. To prove her worth, Angela decides to host an extravagant shoe party at her home, where the company's shoes will be showcased.
As Angela prepares for the party, Tony is tasked with helping her out. However, he becomes increasingly frustrated with the snobbish attitudes of the high-end shoe company representatives. Additionally, Tony's daughter Samantha is attending her first dance and asks her father for help with her dance moves. As Tony becomes more and more immersed in Samantha's world, he starts to feel increasingly out of place at Angela's shoe party.
Throughout the episode, the characters grapple with issues of identity and the ways in which they fit (or don't fit) into certain social circles. Angela struggles to prove her worth to the shoe company, Tony feels out of place among the wealthy and fashionable attendees at the party, and Samantha tries to find her place in the world of middle school dances.
Ultimately, the episode ends on a positive note, with Angela impressing Mr. Purvis and securing the shoe company account, Tony bonding with Samantha and helping her prepare for her dance, and the characters growing closer as a family. "There's No Business Like Shoe Business" is a heartwarming episode that showcases the strengths and struggles of the complex, unconventional family at the center of Who's the Boss?.
