Who Killed Jane Doe? is a true crime series that investigates the unsolved murders of unidentified women, commonly known as Jane Does. In season 1 episode 6, titled "Runaway Jane," the show focuses on a case in which an unidentified woman was found dead in the woods in Bath Township, Michigan.
The episode begins with a recreation of the woman's discovery by a group of boys who were playing in the woods. They stumbled upon the woman's body, which had been there for several months and was badly decomposed, making identification nearly impossible. The local police department opens an investigation and the medical examiner performs an autopsy, but the cause of death remains a mystery.
The investigators on the case turn to forensics to try and identify the woman. Dental records, DNA analysis, and facial reconstruction are all used in an attempt to match the woman with missing persons reports but no matches are found. The investigators are left with few leads and the case goes cold.
Several years later, a woman named Sharon Wyant contacts the police department claiming that she believes the Jane Doe could be her long-lost sister, Brenda Sue Davidson. Brenda had run away from home at the age of 14 and was never heard from again. The investigators begin to look into Sharon's claim and compare Brenda's information with the Jane Doe's case. While there are some similarities, such as the age range and physical characteristics, there are also discrepancies that make it difficult to definitively identify the Jane Doe as Brenda.
The episode delves into Brenda's troubled childhood and the circumstances that led her to run away from home. The investigators interview family members and friends in an attempt to piece together what happened to Brenda after she left home. They also speak to a man who claims to have seen Brenda alive years after she disappeared.
As the investigators continue to work on the case, they encounter roadblocks and dead ends. However, they remain determined to give the Jane Doe a proper identity and bring closure to her family.
"Runaway Jane" is a gripping episode that showcases the dedication of law enforcement and forensic experts who work tirelessly to solve these tragic cases. It also highlights the importance of DNA testing and facial reconstruction in identifying victims and bringing justice to their families.
