As the fifth episode of the first season of When They Cry titled "Jealousy: Cotton Drifting, Part 1" begins, we see that the festival has ended and the six friends- Keiichi, Rena, Mion, Satoko, Rika, and Shion, are back to their usual routine of school and games. However, amidst all the fun and laughter, there is an undeniable sense of tension brewing between Mion and Shion.
It appears that Shion is envious of Mion's position as the head of the Sonozaki family, and Mion is not oblivious to her sister's envy. Meanwhile, Keiichi learns that a dam construction project is underway, which will submerge the village underwater in a few years. The revelation causes unrest among the villagers, and Keiichi finds himself dragged into the middle of the conflict between the pro-dam and anti-dam factions.
As tensions continue to simmer, the group decides to visit an abandoned village situated on the outskirts of Hinamizawa. Once a thriving cotton-farming village, it now lies in ruins, with nothing but empty houses and barren fields. Upon arriving there, Keiichi and the others discover a headless body lying in one of the abandoned houses. The body, missing its right arm, bears an uncanny resemblance to a person whose disappearance was reported a year ago.
Keiichi and Rena alert the police, but when they return to the scene, the body has mysteriously vanished. Meanwhile, Shion begins acting strange, and her obsession with Mion's position as the head of the family is becoming more and more apparent. She confides in Keiichi, telling him about the twin sisters' complicated relationship and hinting at the existence of a dark family secret.
The episode ends with the group returning to Hinamizawa, and Keiichi getting a call from someone claiming to be the victim's sister. The caller asks Keiichi if he's found her brother, but before he can answer, he hears a loud crash in the background, and the call abruptly ends.
Overall, episode five of When They Cry serves as an introduction to the village's sordid past, and the tensions that brew between the characters as they confront it. It subtly hints at something more sinister lurking beneath the surface, and sets the stage for the mysteries that will unravel over the next few episodes.
