In the fifth episode of the first season of What's New Scooby-Doo?, the gang's beloved Mystery Machine gets vandalized by an unknown culprit. The van gets coated in a slimy green substance, leaving a noxious odor that permeates every inch of it. Fred immediately suggests that they take it to his cousin, who runs an auto garage, for repair.
After the repairs have been completed, the gang takes the van for a test run, but things start to go awry. First, the brakes fail, and then the van starts to drive itself, careening wildly through the streets. The gang manage to bring it to a stop, but the van starts to act up again, shutting down completely and trapping them inside.
As they try to figure out what's going on, the gang discovers that the diabolical Dr. Phineus Phibes is behind the sabotage. He's been out for revenge against Fred's family for ruining his career as a scientist. To exact his revenge, he created a device that can control any machine, and he used it to turn the Mystery Machine into his own personal weapon of destruction.
The gang manages to escape from the van, but they're forced to leave it behind. They head to a local science museum, where they encounter Phibes. A battle ensues, with the gang using their wits and courage to try and outsmart Phibes.
As they try to foil Phibes' plan, the gang is helped by a friendly robot named Cyber-Scooby. He is created by Dr. Phibes' former assistant, who now regrets his role in Phibes' plan. Working together, the gang and Cyber-Scooby foil Phibes' plan and save the day.
In the end, the gang is able to recover the Mystery Machine and return it to its original state. They ride off into the sunset, safe in the knowledge that they have once again saved the world from evil forces.
